“If the amount is right, what could still go wrong?” With a bridge transfer, the answer is often the network selected on the other side. That small field decides more than the amount, the speed, or the confidence you had when you clicked.
I learned to treat the destination network as the first decision, not the last confirmation. The options usually look harmless: choose the asset, enter an amount, connect a wallet, and move on. The temptation is to focus on fees or the number of tokens arriving. After seeing how easily a familiar asset can be sent along the wrong route, I changed the order completely.
The check that comes before the transfer
Before connecting anything, I write down three things: the asset, the network it is leaving, and the network where it must arrive. Then I compare those notes with the bridge’s own route selector. If one of the networks is unclear, I stop there. “It looks like the right chain” is not a check; the exact network name is.
That was the useful distinction when I had several routes on the table. One route appeared cheaper, another appeared faster, and a third was the familiar choice. The cheaper route was not automatically better because a lower fee does not repair a wrong destination. The faster route was not better if I could not explain where the asset would be delivered. I chose the route whose source and destination matched my written notes, even though it was not the most attractive number on the screen.
The safe path is deliberately boring: confirm the official route, select the destination network, verify the receiving address in the wallet that will actually hold the funds, and only then enter the amount. For a first attempt, a small test transfer makes the decision reversible in a way that a full balance is not. I also keep the confirmation screen open long enough to read the network names again rather than treating the wallet pop-up as proof that everything is correct.
For the source check, I would use mantabridge to verify the available bridge route before starting. The point is not to trust a remembered route or an old screenshot; it is to check the current source details at the moment the transfer is being made.
What hindsight changes
Hindsight makes the lesson seem obvious, but the mistake is rarely caused by not knowing that networks matter. It happens because the interface gives more visual weight to the amount and the button than to the destination. That is why I now say the network name out loud before approving: “from this network, to that network, for this asset.” If the sentence sounds awkward, the transfer is not ready.
A bridge should make moving an asset easier. It should not make the important choice easy to overlook. Check the destination first, and the rest of the transaction becomes a calculation instead of a gamble.
